Alexander Terblanché graduated with first class honours in Actuarial Science from North-West University, South Africa, in 2009, having represented his university at national level in athletics. He became a Fellow Member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa In 2012, and qualified as a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary in 2013. Alexander writes :
“I was delighted to have been awarded a Mansion House Scholarship as well as a Chevening Scholarship in 2015. I took a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the Said Business School at Oxford, and also qualified for the 2016 University Athletics team, gaining a ‘Blue’ in the annual Varsity Match against Cambridge.
I then returned to South Africa and joined Telesure Investment Holdings, one of the largest non-life insurers in South Africa, offering strategic support in an actuarial role to their executive team. I am currently responsible for two divisions in the business, where I am the Executive Head of Business Insurance and Value-Added Products & Services.
The Mansion House Scholarship exposed me to some of the most talented individuals and leadership in the City of London. The many events offered to the Scholars were some of the highlights of the year I spent at Oxford. I met several senior leaders in the banking and insurance industries, and the scholarship gave me important exposure to the efficiency, professionalism and skills available in the London Market, a key reinsurance market for South African insurance companies.
I owe a great debt of gratitude to the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme for opening these opportunities to me.”
